Engineering guide

What Is a Gas Manifold?

A gas manifold connects one or more gas sources to a common supply system and can incorporate isolation, pressure regulation, monitoring and changeover functions depending on the configuration.

Gas Cylinders
Pigtails / Flexible Connections
Manifold Header
Isolation / Check Valves
Regulation
Pressure Monitoring
Pipeline → Point of Use
Style 01

Single-Source Manifold

Single cylinder or single source. Cylinder → pigtail → isolation → regulator → outlet. For simple gas supply, single-cylinder applications and equipment-level gas supply.

Style 02

Multi-Cylinder Manifold

Cylinder 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 to a common header, then regulation and pipeline. Individual isolation, check valves where required and central pressure regulation.

Style 03

Duplex / Changeover

Bank A and Bank B through changeover to the outlet. Primary and reserve banks with pressure indication and outlet regulation, according to system design.

Style 04

Manual Changeover

The operator manually selects the active source bank. Bank A / Bank B → manual selection → common outlet.

Style 05

Automatic Changeover

Can be configured to switch source banks according to the selected control arrangement.

Style 06 / 07

High-Purity & Cryogenic

High-purity systems require controlled cleanliness and suitable connections. Cryogenic service requires components appropriate for low-temperature conditions.

Important: Actual configuration depends on gas service, source arrangement and application requirements.

Technical core

Typical Gas Manifold Architecture

A representative cylinder manifold arrangement. Final design is selected according to gas service, pressure, flow, source arrangement and downstream demand.

Cylinder Bank A

Pressure Regulation
Gauge / Safety where required
Outlet Isolation
Pipeline → Point of Use
Pressure control

First Stage and Final Stage

Cylinder pressure passes through primary regulation, the manifold or changeover system, secondary regulation where required and point-of-use regulation where required. Single-stage or two-stage regulation depends on the application.

Material selection

Stainless Steel or Brass?

Stainless steel may suit industrial, specialty or high-purity applications where appropriate. Brass may suit selected industrial gas applications. Material selection must be based on gas compatibility and system requirements.

Changeover

Manual vs Automatic

Manual source selection requires operator intervention. Automatic source switching can reduce intervention, but does not remove the need for monitoring, maintenance and cylinder replacement procedures.

Changeover systems may be arranged as Bank A ↔ Changeover ↔ Bank B, subject to the selected configuration. Specification values remain application-specific or configuration-dependent.

Installation workflow

Our Gas Manifold Installation Process

PES can integrate manifold selection, fabrication, site installation, pipeline connection, testing and commissioning within the agreed project scope.

Testing before commissioning: visual inspection, connection checks, appropriate pressure or leak testing, instrumentation verification and changeover operation where applicable.

01

Application Assessment

Review gas, source, demand, pressure, continuity and installation environment.

02

Selection / Design

Develop the manifold arrangement and integration path.

03

Component Selection

Select valves, regulators, gauges, protection and connections.

04

Fabrication / Assembly

Prepare the header, panel, frame or skid arrangement.

05

Site Installation

Install mounting, cylinder connections, valves and instruments.

06

Pipeline Connection

Connect the manifold to the main distribution system.

07

Testing

Carry out appropriate inspection and leak or pressure checks.

08

Commissioning

Verify operation and hand over the configured system.

Designed for cylinder handling

Layouts consider cylinder access, valve access, pigtail routing, bank identification, operator access, maintenance, replacement and physical protection.

Safety considerations

Isolation, regulation, relief, reverse-flow protection, gas-specific components, venting, detection and identification are selected according to gas, pressure, environment and applicable requirements.

Testing & Detection

Connection inspection, gauge verification, regulator operation and gas-specific commissioning procedures can form part of the workflow.

Selection criteria

Which Manifold Configuration Do You Need?

The right gas cylinder manifold system is determined by source arrangement, demand and continuity requirements rather than by a universal standard configuration.

01

One gas source?

Single-source manifold.

02

Multiple cylinders?

Multi-cylinder manifold.

03

Need source changeover?

Manual or automatic changeover.

04

High-purity gas?

High-purity configuration.

05

Cryogenic service?

Cryogenic-compatible configuration.

06

Multiple gas types?

Separate gas-specific manifold systems.

How is a gas manifold sized?

Final sizing should be based on actual system demand and equipment requirements: number of cylinders and banks, gas consumption and peak flow, required pressure and cylinder pressure, operating duration and reserve capacity, downstream pipeline demand, and point-of-use demand.

Oxygen

Appropriate material, component selection and cleanliness requirements.

Nitrogen

Common industrial cylinder-manifold and distribution applications.

Argon

Welding and process-gas applications where appropriate.

Carbon Dioxide

Application-specific pressure-control and connection considerations.

Helium

Specialty and high-purity applications where appropriate.

Specialty Gas

Application-specific material, cleanliness and regulation requirements.

Example Arrangements

These paths are examples only. They are not standard PES ratings or a fixed product catalogue.

Example 01

Simple System

2 cylinders → common header → regulator → pipeline.

Example 02

Duplex System

Bank A → changeover → outlet. Bank B → changeover → outlet.

Example 03

Multi-Point System

Cylinder bank → manifold → regulation → main header → branches → points of use.
