What Does a Gas Pressure Regulator Do?

A pressure regulator reduces and controls gas pressure from an upstream source to a controlled downstream pressure suitable for the next stage of the gas system or the end-use equipment.

The regulator is selected according to where it sits in the gas architecture and what pressure and flow conditions exist at that point.

What Determines Regulator Selection?

Exact specifications are selected from the applicable regulator model and manufacturer datasheet. PES reviews the engineering fields below rather than treating the regulator as an isolated component.

Gas type

Materials, seals and cleaning requirements may vary by gas.

Inlet pressure

The regulator must suit the actual upstream pressure.

Outlet pressure

The pressure range must match the downstream process.

Flow

Required flow must be considered alongside pressure control.

Pressure stability

Standard, precision or two-stage regulation may be appropriate.

Material compatibility

Wetted components must be compatible with the gas.

Connection
